Instead, injuries and limited production held him to 39 receptions, 421 yards and three touchdowns during his Giants career. Gerris Wilkinson became primarily a reserve linebacker and special-teams contributor, while Guy Whimper eventually developed into a starting offensive tackle only after leaving New York.

Barry Cofield became the one major value pick. Selected in the fourth round, he immediately entered the starting lineup, helped anchor the defensive front during the Super Bowl XLII season and later produced several productive years in Washington. His career made him the clearest example of the type of mid-round value the Giants failed to find elsewhere in the class.

Charlie Peprah never played a regular-season snap for the Giants after being waived during final cuts, but he later became a Super Bowl champion and productive starter with Green Bay. Gerrick McPhearson never appeared in an NFL game.

The final verdict is blunt: the Giants found two players they liked, but that was not enough. Kiwanuka and Cofield made the class memorable, yet the volume of misses made the 2006 draft a failure overall.
